We have patented RingX®, our extraordinary TBM milling tools

by AB Tunnelling | News

We have patented RingX ®, our revolutionary TBM milling tools that offer an unbeatable combination of efficiency, durability, and precision. RingX ® are achieving great success on numerous excavation sites internationally, including the construction of the Crossrail tunnel in London and the expansion of the Panama Canal. Here is the patent of our TBM milling tools.

Technical Features:

  • The RINGX® cutting head is equipped with a series of tungsten carbide picks arranged in a specific pattern to ensure optimal cutting performance in difficult geological conditions.
  • The picks are designed to break through hard rock and soil, while the shape of the cutting head helps to reduce wear and tear.
  • Our TBM milling tools are also available with a variety of optional features, such as a dust suppression system and a water injection system.

Benefits:

  • The RINGX® cutting head is designed to provide a number of benefits, including:
  • Increased cutting performance in difficult geological conditions
  • Reduced wear and tear
  • Increased productivity
  • Reduced downtime
  • Improved safety

Applications:

  • The RINGX® cutting head is ideal for a variety of applications, including:
  • Tunnelling in hard rock and soil
  • Trenching
  • Excavation
  • Demolition

Italian tunnelling has work ahead. The challenge is to keep those who deliver it on a sound footing

The strengths and strains of a sector in which investment and expertise must translate into projects that are sustainable for the entire supply chain. Two realities coexist in the Italian tunnelling industry. The first is strong infrastructure demand: ANCE, the...

The AB Tunnelling partner network: integrated expertise for the TBM tunnelling supply chain and precast tunnel segment production

In tunnelling, no one builds alone Excavating a tunnel with a TBM means orchestrating a chain of technical processes that span several engineering disciplines. The cutterhead advances, the spoil is managed, the precast lining takes shape segment by segment, the ring...

Tunnel segment gaskets and connectors: design, materials and performance

In mechanized tunnelling, the quality of the precast segmental lining directly influences the service life of underground infrastructure; accordingly, every component of the lining is engineered to contribute to its overall performance. At the core of every reliable...

Rocchetta tunnel (Napoli–Bari, Italy): addressing abrasive sandstone challenges in TBM excavation

AB Tunnelling presented the Rocchetta tunnel case study at Sapienza University, focusing on TBM excavation in abrasive sandstone and cutter wear mitigation strategies.

Mechanized excavation with TBMs: a strategic approach to modern tunnelling

Mechanized excavation with TBMs has become the benchmark for modern tunnel construction, especially in complex infrastructure projects where time, safety, and cost control are critical. Compared to traditional excavation methods—such as drill & blast or...

TBM backfilling: the strategic role of filling the annular gap in tunnel construction

In mechanized tunnelling, backfilling is an essential process for ensuring stability, safety, and operational continuity during tunnel construction. Filling the annular gap — the space created between the estrados of the precast segments and the excavation profile —...

The heart of precasting: steel moulds for tunnel segments

The story of every tunnel begins well before excavation — in the precast department. It is there, inside steel moulds, that concrete takes shape, becoming the segments that will line the tunnels of the future. For AB Tunnelling, steel moulds are not just tools, but...

The constructional importance of TBM disc cutter performance for tunnelling efficiency

Introduction: why disc cutter performance matters The growing use of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) has radically transformed the tunnel construction industry, offering innovative solutions but posing new challenges in terms of safety, efficiency, and cost...

The role of the TBM cutter head and cutting discs

The TBM cutter head is a key component of the tunnel boring machine (TBM), directly responsible for the interaction with geological formations during excavation operations. Its effectiveness depends heavily on the integration and arrangement of specialized cutting...
